How to play Skyrim multiplayer
Skyrim was made for one player, but the PC community fixed that. There are three ways to play Skyrim online today, and each one is for something different.
Does Skyrim have multiplayer?
Not officially. Bethesda never released an online mode for The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. All the multiplayer there is comes from fan-made mods, which is why it only runs on PC, with a legitimate copy of Skyrim Special Edition or Anniversary Edition.
The question that matters is what you want to play: the campaign with a few friends, a persistent world full of people playing characters, or a traditional MMO set in Tamriel.
- Co-op with friends
Skyrim Together Reborn
An open-source mod that puts a small group of friends in the same Skyrim. One of you hosts, the others connect, and you play the base game quests together. There is no world shared with strangers and no progress that lasts beyond your group.
Best for: Beating Skyrim with your friends.
- Roleplay server
Skyrim RP servers
Dedicated servers, almost all built on SkyMP, where hundreds of people share one world that keeps existing when you log off. There is no campaign to follow: there is an economy, offices, rules and a story the players write. This is where Dovahzul Roleplay lives.
Best for: Living as one character for months.
- Official MMO
The Elder Scrolls Online
The MMO from ZeniMax, sold separately. It is set almost a thousand years before Skyrim and has a Skyrim region on its map, but it is another game, with another engine, combat and progression. It runs on consoles.
Best for: A traditional MMO in the world of Tamriel.
A Brazilian Skyrim RP server
Dovahzul Roleplay is a Skyrim RP server made in Brazil, played in Portuguese, and free. The story starts after the game: Alduin fell, Ulfric died and the nine thrones stand empty. You arrive as a stranger, and nobody knows your name until you introduce yourself.
Every Hold has offices held by players, eight trades depend on one another, dragons are fought in groups and what you discover on the map stays saved. The launcher installs the mod set for you, so you need to know nothing about modding to get in.
Questions about Skyrim online
Does Skyrim have official multiplayer?
No. Skyrim is a single-player game. Multiplayer exists through fan-made mods, such as Skyrim Together Reborn and the roleplay servers built on SkyMP.
Can I play Skyrim online on PS4, PS5 or Xbox?
No. Multiplayer mods only exist for PC on Windows. On console, the closest thing is The Elder Scrolls Online, which is a different game.
Does it work with a pirated Skyrim?
No. Both Skyrim Together and the roleplay servers require a legitimate copy of Skyrim Special Edition or Anniversary Edition. The Dovahzul Roleplay launcher takes the Steam one and the GOG one.
Does it work with Skyrim Legendary Edition?
No. Multiplayer runs on the 64-bit version, which is the Special Edition or the Anniversary Edition. The 2011 Legendary Edition does not work.
How much does Skyrim multiplayer cost?
The mods are free, so the only cost is your copy of Skyrim. Playing on Dovahzul Roleplay is free too.
Is there a Brazilian Skyrim RP server?
Yes. Dovahzul Roleplay is a Brazilian Skyrim RP server, played in Portuguese, with a launcher that installs everything and sign-in through Discord.
What is the difference between Skyrim Together and an RP server?
Skyrim Together is co-op: you and a few friends play the campaign together. An RP server is a persistent world with many people and no campaign, where everyone plays a character and the server rules replace the ones of the base game.
